Wireless speakers or in-ceiling audio?
Wireless speakers are quick to set up and easy to move. In-ceiling speakers disappear into the room but need wire runs and an amplifier.
Wireless speakers
Best for: existing homes and renters
Install: plug in and set up in the app
Look: visible speakers on shelves and stands
Cost: buy one room at a time
In-ceiling audio
Best for: new builds and renovations
Install: speaker wire to each room, best before drywall
Look: nearly invisible, paintable grilles
Cost: priced by number of zones
Rule of thumb: building or renovating? Pre-wire for ceiling speakers in main rooms and outdoor areas. Everywhere else, wireless speakers fill the gaps.
FAQ
Home audio questions
Can I mix Sonos speakers with in-ceiling speakers?
Yes. A Sonos Amp powers traditional in-ceiling or outdoor speakers and adds them to the same Sonos app as your wireless speakers.
What is an audio zone?
A zone is an area that plays its own source at its own volume, such as the kitchen playing music while the den plays a podcast.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Not for background music. For movies, a subwoofer adds the low-end rumble that a soundbar cannot produce on its own.
What is Dolby Atmos?
Atmos adds height to surround sound, so effects seem to come from above. Soundbars like Arc Ultra and Beam create the effect by bouncing sound off the ceiling.
When should audio wiring go in?
During framing, before insulation and drywall. Running wire later is possible but costs more and can mean patching walls.
What is the difference between soundproofing and acoustic treatment?
Soundproofing stops sound from traveling between rooms, using mass, decoupled framing and sealed gaps. Acoustic treatment improves how sound behaves inside a room, using panels, bass traps and diffusers to cut echo. A great theater usually needs both.
Can I soundproof a room after it is built?
Partly. Panels, door seals and added mass help, but the best results come from building it in during construction or a remodel: mass-loaded vinyl, double drywall with damping compound, resilient channels and isolated ceilings.
