How it works: video saves to a microSD card or base station at home

Rule of thumb: want no monthly fees? Choose a camera with local storage. Want the smartest alerts and easy history? Budget for a cloud plan.
FAQ
Security camera questions
Do I need a subscription?
Not always. Reolink and eufy can record locally without one. Ring, Nest and Arlo give you live view without a plan, but saving and reviewing video usually needs one.
Battery or wired cameras?
Battery cameras install anywhere but need recharging. Wired and PoE cameras record continuously and never need charging, which is why professionals use them.
Will cameras work with my Wi-Fi?
Outdoor cameras need a strong signal where they are mounted. Check the signal at each spot with your phone first; a mesh Wi-Fi system often fixes weak coverage.
Can I replace my existing doorbell?
Yes. Most video doorbells connect to existing doorbell wiring, or run on battery if you do not have any.
What does a professional system add?
Round-the-clock monitoring, wired cameras that record continuously, and integration with lights, locks and gates.
