Battery or hardwired shades?
Both work well. The choice usually comes down to whether you are building or renovating, and how many windows you are covering.
Battery
Best for: existing homes and a handful of windows
Charging: every several months to a year, depending on use
Install: DIY, no electrician
Watch out for: tall or hard-to-reach windows
Hardwired
Best for: new builds, renovations and many windows
Charging: never
Install: low-voltage wire to each window, best before drywall
Watch out for: plan the wiring early with your builder
Rule of thumb: building new? Pre-wire every window, even if you motorize later. Finished home? Battery shades are the way to go.
FAQ
Motorized shade questions
How do I measure for motorized shades?
Decide between inside mount and outside mount first. For inside mounts, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the window and use the smallest number. Made-to-measure brands publish their own guides; follow those exactly.
How long do shade batteries last?
Most rechargeable shade motors go several months to a year between charges, depending on shade size and how often it moves. A solar panel or plug-in power removes the chore.
Can I motorize the blinds I already have?
Often, yes. Retrofit kits like Eve MotionBlinds work with many roller shades, and tilt motors like SwitchBot Blind Tilt work on horizontal blinds.
Will motorized shades work with my lighting system?
DIY shades work with their matching app or a Matter hub. In a professional system, Lutron and Hunter Douglas shades can share keypads and scenes with your lighting.
Are motorized shades worth it in a sunny climate?
They help with heat and glare. Shades scheduled to lower in the afternoon keep rooms cooler and protect floors, art and furniture from fading.
